Why Trello is Liked—and Disliked

Getting to Know Trello

Trello is a project management tool that is easy to use, versatile, and allows for greater collaboration. Whether you need a tool for personal projects or for a team, Trello is suitable for businesses of all sizes.

Users can use Trello's intuitive card-based system to organize projects, to-do lists, tasks, and much more. A great feature of Trello is that it can be used anywhere thanks to a convenient mobile app. All you need is an internet connection!

Here, we'll first discuss an overview of Trello's functions and further note the pros and cons to help you leverage a greater understanding.

What is Trello?

Trello is a project management tool, entirely web-based, that uses 'boards'. The boards are lists of lists that allow the users to complete projects of various sizes.

Once a team of users has been created, each member can access the project board. There are three lists on the board, 'To Do', 'Doing', and 'Done'. Under each list, you create a card for each task. Then, as each task progresses to the next stage simply drag and drop across each list until you reach done. It's that easy!

This is the basic function of Trello. You can use many more advanced features and plug-ins to enhance the experience depending on what you need. Cards can have deadlines, checklists, attachments, or plugins added.

The Pros And Cons of Trello

First, let's discuss the pros of Trello:

  • Flexible. Trello is a favorite tool for many users due to its flexibility. To start with the basic plan is free and includes many fantastic features. You can upgrade to a paid service, but the free plan offers such a good package of tools that many users don't require the upgrade. As Trello is web-based it can be accessed from any computer, there just needs to be an internet connection! There is also a mobile app available on App Store and Play Store. All of this means that users can connect using the best way for them and check things on the move if needed.

  • Familiar. Trello has created a project management tool based on how teams would normally act when working on a project face to face. For example, in the office, you might use a whiteboard to map out the project from beginning to end. When using Trello, you are using a digital board but essentially still working in the same way. This makes Trello easy to use as it is a project management system that works in a familiar way.

  • Collaboration. A key feature of any project management tool is the ability to collaborate with everyone involved in the project. Users can easily collaborate using Trello thanks to the ability to connect anywhere and the option to create teams of users.

  • Fun. One thing that helps Trello stand out from the crowd is the ability to customize the boards. You can use different colors, backgrounds, and users can add reaction stickers. All of this helps make working on the project a bit more fun for all involved.

As you can see, Trello has many great features that will suit businesses of all sizes. What about the cons? Here are the potential cons of Trello:

  • Board limits. Trello's free package allows a maximum of 10 boards per team. If you need more, then you would have to upgrade or find an alternative project management tool that is better suited to large-scale projects.

  • Dependency management. Some projects that need to utilize task dependency require a Gantt Chart. This would mean looking for a Trello alternative as Trello is not optimized for this style of project management.

A great alternative to Trello that caters to larger projects is Asana. Asana can handle projects requiring dependency management and projects that are more complex.

Trello is an easy-to-use project management tool that businesses of all sizes can use. Thanks to its familiar approach, users can quickly learn how to use Trello and start collaborating on projects right away.
